Relatives of former Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu have regained freedom after being abducted in Ibadan, Oyo State. Police rescued the 3 victims on June 6, 2026, following a 3-day search operation.

What Happened
Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, 43, younger sister of Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and her 12-year-old twin sons Peter and Paul were abducted on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. According to reports, gunmen trailed their vehicle in the Elewura-Challenge area of Ibadan South West LGA while she was taking the twins to school and whisked them away.

Police Rescue Operation
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the victims were rescued unharmed during a late-night operation on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Ibadan.

The Force Intelligence Department’s Intelligence Response Team carried out the operation after “sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance, and tactical operations”.

Police said two suspected kidnappers were killed during a gun duel and two others arrested. Two firearms were recovered. Oyo State Commissioner of Police Abimbola Olugbenga confirmed the victims were “safe, healthy and unharmed”.

Kidnappers’ Den Demolished
On Monday, June 8, 2026, Oyo State Government demolished a building at Lakoun, Ayegun-Olojuoro road, Ibadan, identified as where the victims were held captive.

Investigation Update
Police said investigations revealed a personal assistant to a family member allegedly provided information about the family’s daily routine to the kidnappers. A principal suspect was arrested after being on the police watch list. Operations are ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the syndicate.

Family & Government Reaction
The Adelabu family, through media aide Femi Awogboro, expressed gratitude to God, President Bola Tinubu, Gov. Seyi Makinde, the Inspector-General of Police, DSS, and Nigerians for support during the period. The family said the rescue “demonstrated that insecurity is a challenge that transcends partisan politics, ethnic affiliations, religious differences and social status”.

Chief Adebayo Adelabu served as Minister of Power under President Tinubu before resigning to contest the APC governorship primary in Oyo State for 2027. The incident occurred amid other reported kidnapping cases in Oyo State in May-June 2026.
